Travelling north from Italy/Como/Gotthard Tunnel/Zurich is ≈ 240km. Going via the San Bernardino Tunnel/Chur/Zurich is ≈ 293km.

San Bernardino Alternate Route​

​The San Bernardino tunnel route is an alternative, for both northern or southern travel, if there is heavy traffic build-up at the Gotthard Tunnel. This route is very scenic and follows the southern route along Zurich, towards Chur, and finally Belinzona.

2025 Gotthard Tunnel Service – Planned Night Closures​

Regular Gotthard tunnel maintenance is scheduled again for 2025. Alternative routes north and south are the Gotthard pass (if open) and the San Bernardino tunnel.

  • March 31 – April 4, 4 nights, between 10 PM – 5 AM
  • June 2 – 6, 4 nights, between 8 PM – 5 AM
  • June 10 – 12, 2 nights, between 8 PM – 5 AM
  • June 16 – 18, 2 nights between 8 PM – 5AM
  • June 23 – 27, 4 nights, between 8 PM – 5 AM
  • Sep 8 – 12, 4 nights, between 8 PM- 5 AM
  • Sep 15 – 19, 4 nights, between 8 PM- 5 AM
