The Gotthard tunnel in Switzerland has a long history. Initially built for train travel for both people and goods, the Gotthard tunnel has been open for vehicles quite some time now. In more recent times, a second, parallel train tunnel has been completed.

A second vehicle tunnel is currently being constructed and is running parallel to the current Gotthard tunnel with a separation of 70 meters through the Gotthard massive mountain. Planned opening of the second tunnel is late 2027 when all testing completed.

The Gotthard mountain pass road is 26km in length and reaches an altitude of 2,108 meters at the top. The Gotthard pass is closed during the winter season due to the high snow levels.
