The Gotthard tunnel in Switzerland has a long history. Initially built for train travel for both people and goods, the Gotthard tunnel has been open for vehicles quite some time now. In more recent times, a second, parallel train tunnel has been completed.

A second vehicle tunnel is currently being constructed and is running parallel to the current Gotthard tunnel with a separation of 70 meters through the Gotthard massive mountain. Planned opening of the second tunnel is late 2027 when all testing completed.
